REMOVAL OR MODIFICATION OF A SMALL FOLD OF TISSUE CALLED A FRENULUM
Frenuloplasty refers to the surgical correction of a small band of tissue on the underside of the penis (known as the frenulum) which tethers the foreskin to the penile shaft. The frenulum is present in all uncircumcised men and many circumcised men. While the frenulum is part of normal male anatomy, many men suffer from a short or tight frenulum that may cause restriction of erections, abnormal penile angulation and discomfort. Frenuloplasty involves either the incision of the frenulum (known as a frenotomy) or the excision and removal of the frenulum (known as a frenectomy or frenulectomy).
Our surgeons will assess the condition of your penile frenulum and discuss the procedure with you.
Local anesthesia is used to numb the penis and frenulum. Patients may also choose to use nitrous oxide for additional relaxation. Our surgeon makes a small incision to release or modify the tight or short penile frenulum, allowing Sutures may or may not be used, depending on our surgeon's preference.
SEXUAL ACTIVITY MUST BE AVOIDED FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH
Following the procedure patients should plan to return home and spend the day relaxing with reduced activity. Mild penile pain can be managed in most cases with acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Patients may resume daily showers one day after surgery, taking care to avoid directly scrubbing the penis. It is essential that patients avoid submerging their incision under water for at least one month and until cleared by our surgeons. This means no baths or swimming while recovering. Sexual activity must be avoided for at least one month and until cleared by our surgeons.
