How painful is circumcision for adults?

Circumcision for adults can vary in terms of discomfort during and after the procedure. During the procedure, we use nitrous oxide to manage our patients’ discomfort during administration of local anesthetic which we use to numb the area. Once the local anesthetic has a few minutes to take effect, patients are generally very comfortable and relaxed for the duration of the procedure.

After the procedure, some discomfort and sensitivity are normal. The glans, or, “head” of the penis, has been covered by the foreskin until now so patients can experience sensitivity after the procedure from having the glans exposed. This can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers such as Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the surgical site are common and typically peak within the first few days before gradually subsiding over the following weeks. Full recovery can take several weeks, during which time activities that might strain the surgical site, such as vigorous exercise or sexual activity, should be avoided to prevent complications and promote healing. Keeping any follow-up appointments with the surgeon are important to ensure that healing is progressing well and to determine if healing is sufficient to resume all activities, including sexual activity.

Discomfort can be managed through the use of pain medication, following the doctor's recommendations, and applying a cold compress to the area to reduce swelling. Keeping the area clean and dry is important to prevent infection, which can lead to increased discomfort. Adequate rest and avoiding strenuous activities help speed up recovery and minimize discomfort.

Overall, while adult circumcision can involve some sensitivity and discomfort, proper pain management and post-operative care can significantly reduce these symptoms and ensure a smooth recovery.
